SPM 2024 Biology (Real Paper), Paper 2 (Question 3)

Question 3:
Diagram 3.1 shows two types of main inorganic nutrients required according to their quantities by plants.

(a)(i) State one example of a macronutrient that is required by plants. [1 mark]

(ii) Complete Diagram 3.1. [1 mark]

(b) Diagram 3.2 shows a leaf that is lack of a certain macronutrient.

Explain how the lack of the macronutrient causes the effect as seen in Diagram 3.2. [3 marks]

(c) Diagram 3.3 shows a cross-section of a structure of eudicot root.

There are cells in the epidermal layer that are modified to form root hair cells.
– Draw one root hair cell structure in the space provided.
– Label X on the structure of the root hair cell that increases the intake of water and mineral salt.
[2 marks]

Answer:
(a)(i) Carbon (C) / Calcium (Ca) / Hydrogen (H) / Magnesium (Mg) / Oxygen (O) / Phosphorus (P) / Nitrogen (N) / Sulfur (S) / Potassium (K)

Any one answers

(a)(ii) Micronutrients

(b)
P1: Yellowish leaves / pale green / faded // The area between the veins of the leaf becomes yellow / chlorosis
P2: Due to lack of nitrogen / calcium / magnesium / potassium / sulfur
P3: Lack of chlorophyll formation (nitrogen only) // any correct description matches P2
P4: Inhibited protein synthesis / Stunted growth

Any three answers

(c)
P1:

Characteristic of drawing
– Projections are clear
– Cell walls are complete
– Vacuoles are large and enter the projections

P2: Label X on any part indicates long projection/thin wall/large vacuole size
